A study on the occurrence of frost crack of Cryptomeria japonica growing in the Chizu destrict of Tottori Prefecture was carried out and the following results were obtained. (1) The rate of frost crack was 12% on the average of investigated stands. It was recognized that there was a positive and significant correlation between altitudes and the occurrence of frost crack. The damage was heavier at concave lays of 950m above the sea as compared with low altitude sites. (2) There was a weak and positive correlation between the diameter of damaged trees and the length of frost crack. (3) In frot crack trees, the percentages of water content in hertwood was higher than those of sapwood as compared with sound trees.
