Abstract

Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) is a new technique for patient care during surgery or examination and becomes more and more popular. In MAC, anesthesiologists manage the sedation of patients under local anesthesia to remove their anxieties, to avoid their unexpected movements and to erase their memories. In this study, we are developing a sedation control system in MAC using a state-predictive controller. In our system, propofol is used as the anesthetic drug and bispectral index (BIS) is used as the index of sedation. In this paper, we report an improved model of the response of BIS to propofol, an identification method of individual differences and simulation results of our system.
