Abstract
Body temperature regulation functions are noticeably diminished during sleep as compared to during wakefulness. So it is important to create a warm environment to ensure sound and restful sleep. In this study, we controlled the temperature in the subject's bed at 32 degree, and examined how this affected sleep. The results indicated that this temperature control did not hinder the reduction in heart rate during sleep. We were able to confirm that the ratio of slow-wave sleep (SWS) increased in comparison to cases in which the temperature in the bed was not controlled. These results show that temperature control does not hinder sleep, which functions to provide the body with rest, and therefore has the potential to improve the quality of sleep. Furthermore, the results of subjective evaluations indicated that temperature control improved the level of comfort in going to sleep under the cold climate.
