Investigations were carried out in a private home in order to obtain data for use in a pamphlet showing how to ventilate rooms at home. The following results were obtained.
(1) Ventilating a room with air from an adjoining room prevented cold outdoor air from entering. Opening two doors was more effective than opening one.
(2) Outdoor air was more effective for ventilation than air from an adjoining room. Opening two doors was more effective than opening one. The room had to be ventilated for more than 5 minutes to decrease the concentration of pollutants sufficiently when outdoor windspeed was weak.
(3) When ventilating using a ventilating fan, opening a door increased effectiveness by creating an outside air stream. Which door to open should be decided on the basis of the air stream in the room.
