The purpose of this paper is to investigate why women have higher job satisfaction than men do in Japan, using micro data from Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) pooled 2000-2002. In general, women's work conditions are worse than men, but it is reported that women have higher job satisfaction than men have. We attempt to evaluate this "proposition" using Ordered Probit Model and Sample Selection Model. Main results are as followings: the proposition that women have higher satisfaction than men have is applicable among the over 39-year-old married people, especially with regular job. However, by adjusting the sample selection bias, it is concluded that there is no gap on satisfaction between men and women. Therefore, we indicate the possibility that women's expectations of work are lower than men's or women with low job satisfaction leave from job market.
