Abstract

Swimming was introduced in education in Japan before World War II but did not spread widely as a sport until after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In the following years swimming spread to people swimming of a wide range of ages and was used not only in the fields of sports and education but also in child-rearing, rehabilitation, and health maintenance. In recent years the new activity of baby swimming continues to be recognized for its high effectiveness in the healthy development of infants. Behind this is the idea of using the music educational approach called eurhythmics in exercise performed in water. This study examined how the rhythmicity of eurhythmics is used in water exercise, and confirmed the benefit of water exercise in infants. Baby swimming may thus be considered to have an important position in lifelong health. This article also discusses educational productivity from use of eurhythmics, which is at the core of baby swimming.
