From June, 1964 to September, 1965,the growth of Mytilus edulis distributed along the shore of Suma, Sumanoura and Tarumi, in the west of Kobe city was observed. Mytilus edulis growing on the surfaces of the jetties for sand arrestation undergo seasonal vicissitudes, massing into countless numbers in summer, disappearing completely in winter. The vertical distribution of this species is subjected to the seasonal and local conditions. It can be said, however, that the extent of the inhabitable field of this species is about 60 to 100cm above K. D. L. and 50 to 60cm below K. D. L., and that the remarkable difference of growth is noticeable between the population of this species in the upper part of the vertical distribution and in the middle or the lower. The population inhabiting at about 80cm above K.D.L. have grown to 20mm in length in half a year, 40mm in one year. Those which have grown up to 45mm in the middle or the lower part could have grown only to be 30mm in length in the upper part. Those occurring at about the middle point of vertical distribution may be expected to grow up to 45mm in a year.
