This paper discusses the use of episode data of motivation for professional development, by reporting on the “L2 learning motivation” thematic unit conducted in an English teacher education course. In two consecutive 90-minute lessons of Teaching English as a Foreign Language, the participants (i) reflected upon specific episodes on motivation/demotivation, (ii) shared their reflection in groups, and then (iii) thought about factors underlying the episodes (e.g., personal relevance of learning materials and activities, sense of improvement, perception of responsibility for other learners), and thus they deepened their understanding of L2 learning motivation by integrating their reflection with theoretical concepts (e.g., attribution, self-efficacy, goal setting). The rationale and important characteristics of the main activities and materials are described in detail, and the results of actual implementation are discussed, based on the evaluation data from the participants. This case study is intended to provide implications for the discussions of pre-service English teacher education, in terms of the usefulness of motivation episodes, and more generally in terms of effective ways to promote reflection on language learning experiences and to integrate personal experiences and theoretical knowledge.
