The latest Course of Study, revised in 2008 for primary and lower secondary education and in 2009 for upper secondary education, implies that the Ministry of Education puts much more emphasis on English language education than ever before, and the ministry apparently aims to improve English language teachers’ English proficiency to use English more in their classes. Taking such background into consideration, the purpose of this paper is to propose a teacher training program for in-service secondary school English language teachers to improve their classroom English ability. First, this study reviews the implications from the results of the questionnaire survey (Yamamori, 2012b; Yamamori, 2013), which investigated lower and upper secondary school English teachers’ attitudes toward classroom English and the realities of their use of it. Then, it reports the contents and the results of two training programs, which were practiced at Naruto University of Education in 2011 and 2012. Finally, considering the results of the questionnaire and two practices of the training program, this paper will propose a revised plan of the training program.
