The new Course of Study for Foreign Language in Elementary Schools includes the
instruction of sentences and sentence structures. In these new courses , consideration must be
taken not to put too much emphasis on grammar terminology or the usage of grammar.
Therefore，appropriate grammar instruction, not for junior high schools but specifically for
elementary schools，must be examined thoroughly and immediately. The aim of this study is to
determine the proper way to teach elementary school students English grammar, especially the
word order which differs from the word order of Japanese. To identify the word order of English,
three ways of instruction; "class type", "group type" and "individual type" were conducted and discussed. The result of the survey showed that students found it "fun" when involved in a group activity and "understood" it in a class activity, while individual study contributed the most to word order comprehension on a test.
