The effect of the addition of Mo and Al to Cr in diffusion-coating has been investigated by carrying out stress corrosion cracking tests and electrochemical examinations. Austenitic stainless steels, SUS304, and SUS304L were diffusion-coated with Cr-Mo, and SUS304 with Cr-Al in H2 atomosphere. The addition of Mo improved the resistance to stress corrosion cracking, because it increased the stability of passivity and inhibited the break of passivity. On the other hand, the addition of Al made the passivity unstable and a bad effect on the resistance to stress corrosion cracking was recognized because of the diffusion of Al into the base metal, SUS304.
