This article is a study on the Handen-Shuju, that is, the land tenure system of ancient Japan. In the first section the author tries to find information on the Sanpan-Shuju (三班収授) land system in the Taiho-Ryo, and he concludes that this land system was not recognized in the Yoro-Ryo (養老令). The Handen was enforced every sixth year, while the Shu-ju was enforced every twelfth year. The Handen-Shuju system allowed people six years old and over to occupy land, Kubunden (口分田). In the second section of this article the author studies the nature and workings of this land system and explains why he rejects the theory that insists upon the existance of the Handen-Shuju in the Kiyomigahara-Ryo (浄御原令). In the final section the author discusses how the Sanpan-Shuju land system was enforced and amended. He believes that this land system continued until 791, when it was replaced by the Yoryo-Ryo system.
