The basic study of the electrification occurring during the melting or the freezing of slags reported in the 1st report has carried out for KCI.
KC1 is prepared in a silica tube which is fixed horizontally in a preheating nichrome coil, by which the temperature of KC1 is maintained over 620°C. Following the movement of a movable electric furnace outside of the coil, the melting or the freezing of KC1 in the silica tube can be occurred along the axis of the tube.
During the phase changes of KC1, the solid has generally a positive charge with regard to the melt. The magnitude of the e. m. f., ca 0.33±0.03V, is independent of the freezing-or melting-rate over a wide range. The shape and distance of Pt electrodes have little effect. Another measurement of the e. m. f. between the solid and the melt at a stationary state with a constant gradient of temperature shows the e. m. f. is negligiblly small.
It is, therefore, concluded that this electric phenomena appears while the phase changes are occurring.
