An experimental study of the size effects and the energy laws of single particle crushing under slowrate of loading in a coarse size range was carried out by using disks having the dimenstion ratio of1 (diameter) to 0.5 (length) made of borosilica glass, quartz, feldspar, lime stone and marble.
The volumes of prepared specimens ranged 0.2 to 40cm3and the rate of loading is 0.3t/min.
A summary of experimental results was as follows, I) as formulated by equation (5) the elastic strain energy per unit mass of specimen stored up to breaking (E/M) is proportional to 2 power of strength Sd, II) similarly (E/M) is proportional to (-6/m) power of particle size x and is calculated by the equation (11), where m is the Weibull's coefficient of uniformity, III) as illustrated by equation (12) the index of the equation (1) can be calculated from the relation of a=(m+6)/m, IV) as shown in table 2 the values of m obtained by the disk splitting test are larger than the values obtained by the sphere splitting test.
This difference may be caused by the higher restriction of the direction of fracture due to the line contact loading of the disk aplitting test.
