The production of aluminum has been made by the Bayer and Hall-Heroult process for many years, while the other various producing methods were studied during this period. Therefore, it is important. to describe historical progress and classification of these processes.
Especially past reports and patents of fundamental and industrial examinations on the direct reduction of aluminum were summarized in this article. In addition, our study on the production of crude aluminum alloy by the carbothermic reduction was also described in detail.
