Complex formation equilibria of Hg
2+ with L
- (xanthate or aerofloat ion) were studied by means of the spectroscopic and emf, methods in connection with the removal of Hg
2+ from waste-water.
From the spectroscopic method, the formation of 1: 1 complex ion, HgL
+, was suggested in the presence of excess Hg
2+.
On the other hand, in the presence of excess xanthate or aerofloations, the resolution of hardly soluble HgL
2 was found by means of emfmethod.
The behavior of aerofloat ions in acidic aqueous solution was also examined and aerofloats were found to be superior to xanthate in its application to acidic waste-water treatments.
From these foundamental studies on the equilibria involving the collectors ions, it was found to be possible to reduce Hg
2+ concentrations.
