In the 1st report of this Series, we measured the velocities of longitudinal wave propagation in wire ropes and proposed to explain the properties of wire ropeswith Zener viscoelastic model.
The present investigation attempts to measure the coefficient of internal friction and analyze the propagation waves in wire ropes.
Conclusions thus obtained are summerized as follows.
(1) The reduction of wave top in propagation is 7-17%, when waves travel about 5m.
(2) The coefficient of internal friction (ζE0) is 59-140kg·s/mm2 and seems to depend onthe construction of wire ropes.
(3) The calculated results using the above values have been compared with the measured results. The comparison shows that our analytical method is practical.
