Selenium in copper anode containing silver is associated with copper as cupric selenide, but during the electrolytic refining, silver is dissolved into electrolyte and then reacts with cupric selenide to form anode slime as silver selenide or copper-silver selenide by the following reactions;
When the mole ratio of silver to selenium is two to one, the primary reaction is
Cu2Se+Ag2SO4=CuAgSe+Ag+CuSO4
Silver produced in thisreaction is further dissolved by oxygen in the solution and consequently silver selenide is formed by
CuAgSe+Ag+H2SO4+1/2O2=Ag2Se+CuSO4+H2O
The overall reaction, therefore, is
Cu2Se+Ag2SO4+H2SO4+1/2O2=Ag2Se+2CuSO4+H2O
In the case of more or less silver content than above ratio, slime contains silver selenide and silver or copper-silver selenide, respectively, by
Cu2Se+2Ag2SO4=Ag2Se+2Ag+2CuSO4
Cu2Se+1/2Ag2SO4+1/2H2SO4+1/402=CuAgSe+CuSO4+1/2H2O
