There have been preserved a great variety of written and engraved copies of the "Lanting xu" 蘭亭序 by Wang Xizhi 王羲之. In this article I reexamine the close similarities pointed out by previous scholars between the copies attributed to Chen Jian 陳鑑 (Old Palace, Beijing) and Lu Jishan 陸継善 (National Palace Museum, Taipei), especially the reproduction of damaged sections in the original and the slant of the lines. Both are copies of the same original, and both were copied by Lu Jishan (1297?-1350?) around 1330 from an older original.
Since both of these copies have characteristics of the Shenlong 神龍 and Zhang Jinjienu 張金界奴 copies, they cannot have derived from the Shenlong copy, as has been the case in the past, and they stand midway between the Shenlong and Zhang Jinjienu copies, sharing a common ancestor. A consideration of the lineage of the copies would suggest that the Shenlong copy was not copied directly from the original "Lanting xu," which was still extant in the early Tang 唐.
Trace copies of an album in which Chen Jian (1415-71) copied the so-called Chen Jian copy of the "Lanting xu" include that in the Takashima 高島 Collection (Tokyo National Museum), hitherto said to be a Song tracing of a copy by Chu Suiliang 〓遂良, a trace copy by Zhang Heming 張鶴鳴, and a trace copy held by Shanghai Library, the last of which is the oldest trace copy. The Laiqinguan 来禽館 album copy is thought to be a copy of Chen Jian's copy, while the Yugangzhai 鬱崗斎 album copy belongs to the same line of copies but is a copy of a different base text.
There is also a possibility that the two copies attributed to Chen Jian and Lu Jishan correspond to grandchildren of the second copy of the Su 蘇 family mentioned in the history of calligraphy by Mi Fei 米〓. The view that the so-called Chen Jian copy is a copy made by Chen Jian has been around since the 1960s, but the accounts of An Qi 安岐, Wang Shizhen 王世貞, Wen Jia 文嘉, and Yu Mu 郁穆, on which it is based, are not sufficiently reliable.
