Even if one restricts oneself to the period since the modern age (i.e., since the Taisho 大正 era in Japan and the Republican period in China), there have accumulated a vast number of studies on Yan Zhenqing 顔真卿, and many new facts have been brought to light. But the fact that there were many aspects to Yan Zhenqing means that articles about him are carried in many different journals and the classification of bibliographies is wide-ranging, and this would seem to have made it difficult to gain an overall grasp of research on him. In this article, I accordingly review the more important studies among research on Yan Zhenqing since modern times that I have managed to collect, dividing them broadly into basic sources, calligraphy, and biography, and I ascertain the current state of research.
Among other things, I point out that the publication of illustrations of his works has had an enormous influence on the study of Yan Zhenqing, and in research on his calligraphy an urgent task is the overall classification of his works; all these studies have achieved many results with the aim of examining his personality and calligraphic style; since the possibility has been pointed out that his calligraphic style took root in later times with minor modifications, a future task may be to examine how people of the Song 宋 period and later who appreciated his calligraphy regarded his calligraphy and personality; and the examination of his reception in later times may be considered a task that needs to be undertaken also with respect to other calligraphers and their works, starting with Wang Xizhi 王羲之, regarded as the leading exponent of the classical style.
