A method for the determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in wooden chips was investigated.
PCP was distilled with steam and extracted with n-hexane from acidified distillate. PCP in n-hexane was extracted with 0.1M sodium carbonate solution and then acetylated with acetic anhydride. PCP acetate was extracted with n-hexane and purified by silica gel column chromatography. The eluate was analyzed by gas chromatography using an electron capture detector.
Acetyl derivative of PCP gave heigher recorder response than free PCP.
The recovery of PCP from PCP added wooden chips was 98.4%.
