Morisaki Kazue (1927-) used the term “hostage” only in her Chikuho period (1958-1978). The keyword is important to understand Morisaki’s thought not because of the frequency of using but its meaning and background and the role in changing of Morisaki’s thinking. This phrase was first appeared when a Korean in Japan, Zainichi, Kim Heero, barricaded himself in a Japanese style inn in 1968. Morisaki found that when independency and subjectivity of hostage is nullified temporarily, an opportunity show itself to overcome her “modern ego” which she learned from her parents when she lived in colonial Chosun, and which was inseparable with colonial rule for her. Morisaki tried to exceed the limits of her father who was a liberalist but an educator as colonizer, as facing the Kim’s incident. So, she recollected her childhood memories and discussed the connection between past and present, to pointed out that the modernistic meaning of individualism which was continued after the end of the war. For this challenge the term “liberty” is the key word and the hostage is as an opportunity to make new prospect. Therefore, the meaning of liberty for Morisaki is possibility of repositioning which is different from modern society’s meaning.
