Although electromagnetic flowmeters are practically used in industry, many problems yet remain unsolved for use of blood flow measurement. This paper, describing the desgin and performance of an implantable electromagnetic blood flowmeter, discusses some problems in question as well as errors due to these problems. Discussed in this paper are as follows:
1) Effect of nonuniformity of magnetic flux.
2) Effect of flow profile.
3) Effect of conductivity of arterial wall.
4) Sensitivity change according to fluid properties.
5) Sensitivity difference between steady flow and pulsating flow.
6) Characteristics of various metal electrodes.
7) Noise of amplifier and detector.
