This study used an auditory lexical decision task to investigate the auditory processing of Chinese-Japanese homographs by Chinese learners of Japanese. In the experiment, phonological similarity and semantic relatedness between Chinese and Japanese were manipulated as independent factors, and the reaction time was adopted as the dependent variable. The inhibition effects of semantic relatedness, but not the effects of phonological similarity, were observed in the experiment. No interaction effects of phonological similarity and semantic relatedness were observed. These results showed that when semantic relatedness is high, Chinese conceptual representation is also activated. These results also suggest that the auditory processing of Chinese-Japanese homographs by Chinese learners of Japanese is different from the visual processing. On the basis of this evidence, the model is proposed.
