This paper reviews the papers published in the Japanese Journal of Tourism Studies, the official journal of the Japanese Society for Interdisciplinary Tourism Studies. The author reviewed 134 papers, from the first issue up to the most recent issue, No. 20. The author investigated how the composition of types of papers changed, which topics were selected, and the research trends that occurred. The results revealed that the number of papers contributed decreased, as did the percentage of full papers. Conversely, the percentage of research notes and invited papers increased, particularly in the last few issues, corresponding to the twilight period of the journal’s lifecycle. Two major topics were special interest tourism (SIT) and community-based tourism (CBT). On the supply‒demand clarification, the supply side papers accounted for over 60%. This means that this journal contributed to tourism research in Japan, from its supply side research and its SIT and CBT studies. One lesson learned from the journal’s lifecycle is that it is essential to increase the number of young members of the Society, in order to maintain productive research activity and the quality of its academic journal.
