An emerging method to determine reactions and decay properties of unstable or rare nuclei, namely, the surrogate reaction method, is a unique tool in obraining data for nuclear technology, nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics. Status of a research in the surrogate method based on heavy-ion as well as light-ion projectiles carried out at JAEA in collaboration with other organizations is described.
