Controlling dispersion conditions is a prerequisite for most fine particle applications. Although various dispersants have widely been used to facilitate fine particle dispersion in solvents, the structure-function relationship remains elusive and controversial. On the contrary, definition of the term “fine particles dispersion” is somewhat unclear and therefore, mechanistic discussion on dispersants is also challenging. The aim of this article is to revisit fine particle dispersion to get organized for structure-function relationship studies of dispersants. Amphiphilic phosphonic acids are designed and synthesized as novel dispersants for oxide nanoparticles to provide a representative example.
