Abstract

A new impact testing appaatus was constructed for the investigation of single particle crushing under impact load. The apparatus was composed of a drop weight which gives an impact load to the single particle, and of a piezoelectric system for measuring the dynamical load which is produced by the collision between a drop weight and the particle. The impact load was measured quantitatively with various kinds of drop weights and glass beads of five grain sizes as specimens. The main results were as follows: (1) The relationship between the impact energy and the dynamic load produced showed agreed well with Hertz's law of contact. (2) The duration time of impact decreased with the increase of the impact velocity of the drop weight, and these results were consistent with Timoshenko's analysis.
