Printed wiring board scraps were pulverized by a swing hammer-type impact mill with a screen under several operating conditions. A particle shapesorting technique using an inclined vibrating plate (IVP) was applied to recover copper particles from the pulverized product based on the shape difference of each component.
The optimum operating conditions for pulverizing and separation was investigated experimentally. Also, the effects of mill operating conditions, such as the hammer circumferential speed and screen aperture size, on the shape and size distribution of pulverized products were examined.
The results are summarized as follows:
(1) Maximal separation efficiency was obtained at a mill condition of 70.2m/s hammer circumferential speed and 1mm screen aperture size with an IVP condition of 1-2 vertical component of vibration intensity and an inclination angle of 12°.
(2) There was a general tendency for pulverized non-copper components to be smaller than copper components. The highest sphericity of copper particles was obtained at 52.5m/s hammer circumferential speed with a 1mm screen aperture.
