Fluidized bed medium separation (FBMS) technology was applied to dry coal cleaning. The FBMS utilizes floating and sinking of coals with different specific gravity in a gas-solid fluidized bed. Mixture of calcium carbonate and zircon sand was used as the fluidized bed medium. The apparent specific gravity of fluidized bed was adjusted to between 1.3 and 2.1 by varying the bulk volume fraction of calcium carbonate and the superficial air velocity. FBMS system with a device that can continuously discharge floating and sinking coals was used for the continuous cleaning of Ikeshima coal. As a result, for coal with specific gravity of 1.4-1.6, the yield of clean coal of 60-70% and ash recovery of 60-80% were attained with probable error of 0.04-0.05 at coal feed rate of 30-1000kg/h.
