The clinical features of 678 patients with oral mucosal lesion who were referred to the Second Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Osaka University Dental School Hospital between January 1985 and December 1994 were reviewed. The 678 patients were classified as bullous lesion in 3 cases, aphtous lesion in 106 cases, infection in 45 cases, stomatitis in 37 cases, pigmentary anomaly in 27 cases, autoimmune disease in 6 cases, lesion of lip in 18 cases, lesion of tongue in 116 cases, keratinized lesion in 318 cases, and other lesions in 2 cases.
The keratinized lesions were found in 318 patients (45%) of the oral mucosal lesions in this report, and they were classified as lichen planus in 167 cases, leukoplakia in 150 cases, and leukoedema in 1 case.
