The mechanical properties of concrete in which gravel was partially bonded with mortar was examined. Two types of mortar with different water-to-cement ratios were used to prepare six concrete mixes with varying porosities. Uniaxial compression tests, splitting tensile tests, and triaxial compression tests were conducted. The results were compared with existing knowledge on porous concrete and granular geomaterials. It was found that the effect of mortar binding strength becomes relatively small in high-porosity concrete. In particular, within the range corresponding to porous concrete, the dominant deformation mechanism was not shear deformation of the material but rather shrinkage deformation caused by negative dilatancy due to the movement and rotation of gravel particles.
