Crossing Experiments between Autumn- and Spring-fruiting Types of Sargassum horneri (Phaeophyta)

Abstract

Intraspecific crossing between autumn- and spring-fruiting types of Sargassum horneri were studied by controlling the maturation period of the two types in laboratory culture. In crossing tests between the two types, fertilized oospores were obtained. They showed normal growth and formed receptacles. Furthermore, these F₁ plants were fertile. The crossing techniques demonstrated here provide a tool for conducting further experiments on intraspecific differentiation and for producing seedlings with better characters for the formation of underwater forests of this species.
