It was found that the determination of ammonia using Nessler's reagent was seriously suffered from the interference of formaldehyde. Thus the comparison was made of the analyses of ammonis using Nessler's and pyridine-pylazolone (p-p) procedures. It was found that the p-p procedure was free from the interferance from the major air pollutants and gave considerably lower ammonia level than the Nessler's procedure. The procedures for the sampling of ammonia were also tested. Although the sampling into 1/50 N sulfuric acid gave considerably lower efficiency of sampling with prolonged sampling, the sampling on glass fiber filter impregnated with sulfuric acid provided the high efficiency of sampling even with the flow rate of sampling of as high as 15 l/min. The atmospheric concentration at mountain, coast, residential and business areas measured by p-p procedure mostly ranged from 5 to 15 μg/m3 and the maximum concentration of 30 μg/m3 occurred at Chuo University.
