In cats gaseous metabolic rate was measured on applying a heat debt of 1.3-2 Cal. per kilo before and after removal of the suprarenal medulla.
Heat debt was established by introducing cold water through the stomach fistula, previously prepared. Metabolic determinations were carried out in healthy animals, ample time being allowed to elapse before the metabolic experiment. Effect of demedullation was afterwards verified.
(1) Metabolic rate was not altered by demedullation of suprarenals, if any. Heat debt of 1.3-2 Cal. acted to raise metabolic rate by about forty per cent before and after demedullation as well.
(2) It is difficult to point to any intensifying of shivering due to such a mild cooling by demedullating the suprarenals in the dogs of Wada, and in our cats.
