Abstract
1. The clinical history, findings, and treatment in an infantile case of meningococcal meningitis is reported. In this case total blindness and deafness occurred in the course of illness and continued during at least 3 months. Hydrocephalus also occurred; and then the patient' recovered completely from all.
2. The patient was treated with injection of prontosil solible (5%, 180 c.c. in total) for more than 80 days under the combined use of yakriton. Except for occasional cyanosis, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and fever, there had been no serious symptoms of poisoning. Lumbal puncture was also performed 21 times, and antimeningococcal serum was also administered.
3. Blood was examined 5 times.
Nothing noteworthy was found hematologically. At the beginning of illness, blood showed a strong neutrophilic leucocytosis with lymphopenia and aneosinophilia, and then eosinophiles rose to 360 in absolute count at the end of the 2nd month of illness. Nearly 80 days passed before the neutrophile count returned to the normal value; and by this time lymphopenia had not yet recovered.
4. From various literature a comparison of mortality among the cases of meningococcal infection treated with and without sulfanilamide (Cf. Table 4) and the tolerant doses of sulfanilamide (Cf. Table 5) were tabulated.
