An improved assay method of β-glucuronidase activity in bile is described. Fishman's original method was improved in three points.
1) The difficulty in colorimetry due to bile pigment can be avoided by dilution of bile and the use of animal charcoal.
2) The prolongation of incubating time of bile may facilitate the determination of the activity of β-glucuronidase.
3) The use of ethanol after incubation is effective not only to stop the reaction, but also to extract liberated phenolphthalein.
