Trail degradation is a critical issue in national parks, yet current educational efforts for trekkers remain inadequate. For example, some trekkers struggle to interpret contour lines, which is essential for understanding terrain. Therefore, intuitive and easy-to-understand methods are needed to effectively illustrate trail degradation effects. A topographic model, typically used in educational settings to understand topographic features, was developed in this study for trail maintenance, and its effectiveness as a communication and educational tool was evaluated. High-resolution data are required to create the topographic model. A three-dimensional model was developed using images captured with a long pole, and a topographic model was fabricated using a 3D printer. Surface water was poured over the model to observe flow patterns. Additionally, university students were asked to observe topographic models, and a questionnaire sur vey was conducted to assess their understanding of trail topography. The water simulation revealed the effectiveness and challenges of trail maintenance. The topographic model aids in planning trail design and maintenance. Many students reported improved comprehension of topography and its changes from the models. In addition, they responded positively to using these models to communicate conservation issues and trail conditions. However, feedback indicates the need for enhancements in model size and color for better clarity in showing trail degradation.
