While the number of military dictatorships deploying public violence has decreased around the world in the past three decades, Myanmar’s junta remains an exception. Now into its seventh decade, it seems determined to rule the country indefinitely by inflicting fear and violence upon the citizens. What explains the remarkable resilience and brutality? This essay suggests that we look for answers in the unique dynamics of the country’s ethnic conflict.
