The present study mainly focused on understanding the well-being of migrant care workers in Taiwan from the perspective of social inclusion. We created and distributed a questionnaire to measure the well-being and social inclusion of migrant care workers. Nearly 200 questionnaires were completed by a sample of care workers that was representative of migrant worker’s regional distribution in Taiwan. The results of our factor analysis and regression model showed that when various control variables are held constant, economic and residential environment factors (including income, community facilities, financial services, neighborhood safety, and housing quality) had the greatest impact on the respondents’ well-being. The government might need to review their migrant worker policies for increasing their socio-economic and living environment.

This article, through critically examining the life story of a Vietnamese refugee currently working in an assisted facility in Japan, excavates multiple and intersectional social labelling mechanisms for migrant growing old in a foreign country, as well as its influence on the individual level. The experience of the informant suggests a dilemma of labelling, between her identity as a member of ethnic minority in Japan, a social position assumed to be helped; and her identity as a health care professional for older adults recognized, a social position depending on the caregiving industry which rely on institutional labelling to obtain proper financial support by the government. Her dilemma indicates two cultural implications underlying the health care system for older adults in Japan, and more generally migrants participating in the system. In addition, she must face her own aging experience shaped by both her occupation and chronological age. On the other hand, she has to distance herself away from other Vietnamese older adults, and broadly other older adults in ethnic minorities to earn her own position of caring them as a healthcare professional.

This research identifies support needs of Asian transnational professional care workers for older Japanese Americans in the U.S. and older Japanese in Japan. It also clarifies their perceived support needs and real support by assisted living facilities, Asian and Asian American community-based organizations, and national/local governments. Finally, the research proposes policy implications. The project member conducted semi-structured interviews. As a result of the content analysis, policy implications were proposed. 1) Assisted living facilities, community-based organizations, and the governments should appropriately correspond to care workers’ support needs. 2) The governments should develop lifelong learning programs. 3) The governments should facilitate networking.
