We have investigted a breaking mechanismunder impact loading of nylon ropes hung onan edge in order to make designability andserviceability of ropes clear. Especially, we havestudied a deformation process to breakage, morphlogical change of broken ends and break-ing tenacity of ropes hung on an edge. Thefollowing results are obtained:
(1) The photomicroscopic observation hasshown that the broken ends of nylon rope hungon an edge are constituted of many filamentyarns whose ends are fused. These filamentyarns whose ends are fused. These fused ends, however, are found not only in an impact rup-ture on an edge but also in a low-speed ruptureas well as in shear breaking under tension
(2) The breaking strength under shockloading is very lower than that under impacttensile loading. This lower value proves theshearing etfect of an edge.
(3) The rate of decrease in breaking streng-th of multi-filament yarn hung on an edgeis proportional to the 1/5 power of the numberof filaments for less than several tens in num-ber of filaments, and proportional to the 1/3power for more than several tens in numberof filaments.
