Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediation effects of transcendence, an aspect of spirituality, on the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and stress responses in a Japanese sample. 940 participants (Mage = 40.42; 442 men, 498 women) completed the questionnaire through online survey. Mediation analysis showed that spirituality partially mediated the association between fear of COVID-19 and stress responses, while these effects were only limited. These results suggest that transcendence of spirituality might play a role in maintaining mental health of Japanese people under the pandemic. Limitations and implications for further study are discussed.
