Effect of pump inlet velocity on the pump performance and appearance of vortex structure are investigated experimentally.
Although in ANSI/HI 9.8 the major dimensions of pump sump are recommended to be defined based on the pump
intake diameter which is determined from the inlet velocity, the dimensions seem to include too much enough allowance in
order to avoid appearance of vortex structures in the sump. We explore an optimum design of pump sumps corresponding
to various pump inlet velocities. Numerical simulations are also carried out, in which commercial CFD (Computational
Fluid Dynamics) software is utilized, and the numerical results are compared with the experimental ones.
