Francis turbine is used in many hydroelectric power stations. This paper presents development of hydraulic performance in a high specific speed Francis turbine runner. In order to achieve the improvement of turbine efficiency throughout wide operating range, a new runner design method which combines the latest Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)and multi objective optimization method with an existing design system was applied in this study. The validity of the new design system was evaluated by model performance tests. As the results, it was confirmed that the optimized runner has higher efficiency compared with an originally designed runner.
