Abstract
In order to advance the studies on the student movements in Japan in the 1960s, this article reviews previous scholarships which discuss the factors of the Berkeley Struggle at University of California, Berkeley in the United States in 1964. The result of the review is as follows. First, the Civil Rights Movement greatly influenced on the Berkeley Struggle, through providing issue, experienced student activists, and its strategy and tactics with it. Second, students with no activist background joined the struggle for three reasons: sympathy for the Civil Rights Movement, the conviction of political rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the realization of ideal university. This results shows that the form of the American student movements was decided by the contemporary social movements and the value embedded in the American society and that the same perspective should be introduced to the future investigation on the Japanese student movements in the 1960s.
