Abstract
The aim of this paper is to represent the time aspect of the informal sector from the perspective of sideline work using our survey of 228 street vendors from the suburban areas of Indonesian cities. Since the 1960s, International Labour Organization has started discussions on the problem of unemployment and inequality in urban areas of developing countries.
We conducted a survey at the Sunday market and at the night market in the Cikarang area, which is a developing suburb of Jakarta, Indonesia. We found two types of street vendors: 1) the type getting income solely from street vending (informal sector), and 2) the type getting income from factory work (formal sector) as well as from street vending (informal sector). Type 1 is usually seen at the Sunday market and type 2 is seen at the night market.
