The objective of this report was a survey of the feelings that university students in elementary school teacher training course held toward past experiences of home economics classes, and the conduct of classes for establishing students’ skills in hand-stitching. From the results, it was determined that over 80% of students liked home economics, and retained pleasant memories of cooking or sewing practice. However, when asked if they liked only sewing classes, less than 60% answered in the affirmative. Additionally, the survey found that only 30% students could back stich and halfback stitch or knew the names of these stitches, while some students not only could not sew overcast but also lacked knowledge of the name. In this survey results showed that it is difficult to have well-established basic hand-stitching skills.
An opaque projector which could show a magnified image of the instructor’s fingertips at various stages was used to teach students how to sew. Afterward, the instructor taught individual students while walking around the class. Survey results showed that with these practical approaches, students’ skills in hand-stitching improved. In addition, enthusiasm for sewing improved by having students make a practice cloth. They tried various designs for use at elementary schools.
