This study is the first large-scale quantitative analysis of private rental housing rent arrears in Japan. The study data is from Leasing Information Communicate Center (LICC). LICC is operating a private rental housing rent arrears information database. The amount of data used in this study is 728,759, the largest scale with the smallest bias. This study aims to provide analysis results required for the discussion of housing safety net, social loss due to rent arrears. We have defined new indicators of rent arrears, and analyzed them. The main findings are as follows. 1) Rent arrears rate is about 3%, long-term rent arrears are particular and serious situation for lender. 2) 0.73% of the contract, which is for long-term rent arrears are accounted for 67% of the total loss. Small lenders cannot always be acceptable for loss of long-term rent a汀ears.3) Social loss due to the rent arrears is estimated to be about 68.3 billion yen in Japan. Rent arrears do not occur very infrequently, but rent arrears bring great loss to the lenders once they arise. The lenders of small-scales are affected larger impact from rent arrears than others. Rent arrears are a social problem to be solved in Japan
