This research aims to study mixed land use as a method of land use in the inner area of residence and commerce of a middle-sized city. Using the city of Hachioji as focus of research, this paper will present an analisys of the resident population trend and housing stock from 1975 to 1995, as well as the changes in the commercial behavior from 1979 to 1994. Specifically, this paper will present the changes in the land use in the case of Hachiman-cho and Azuma-cho between 1977 and 1997.
In Hachiman-cho it is observed that commercial facillities declined while the residential areas increased evidently in the vast construction of high-rise apartment types houses. On the other hand, the reverse is observed in the case of Azuma-cho. Commercial facilities thrived while residential areas decreased. It is therefore suggested that mixed land use should be properly mixized in order to promote the quality of residence and commerce of the inner area of a city.
