The aim of this discussion is an expanded definition of preaspiration from a typological point of view, and a tentative analysis based on this expanded definition of the origin of preaspiration.
In this paper, the various phonetic aspects of preaspiration are first introduced with examples mainly taken from Northsaami, Tibetan and several Qiangic languages. It is suggested that the general opinion about preaspiration has to be modified by applying to the expanded definition because of the phonological function of it in some languages.
Second, with reference to the phonological history of preaspiration in Tibetan, the origin of it in the languages of Northern Europe, especially in the Saami languages, is briefly discussed as a case study from a typological viewpoint in preparation of further, more detailed research.
